The Math And Morality Of PrEP

December first was World AIDS Day; a time to reflect on the state of our struggle with HIV. By any measure 2012 has been a very exciting year in our quest to bring about an AIDS free world. In July of this year the FDA approved the HIV treatment drug Truvada for use as a pre-exposure prophylaxis, or “PrEP.” Basically a once a day pill intended to be used with condoms to dramatically reduce the risk of infection. And when I say “dramatically” I mean Truvada is more that 90% effective at preventing the spread of HIV. That is amazing, stupendous, pop-open-the-champagne kind of news. Though not everyone seems to think so.
