Some people love sports. Some people love fashion. And still others love show business. But automobile lovers—especially gay car lovers like myself—are often a misunderstood lot. Fortunately for us, there are many gay and lesbian car clubs around the country that we can join to meet other car freaks like ourselves. With nearly 1,100 members, the largest LGBT car club in the United States is the Southern California-based Great Autos of Yesteryear (G.A.Y.—get it?), which holds monthly events ranging from museum visits to cruise-ins, as well as a yearly gathering (“concourse,” in car-show speak) every October in Palm Springs.
Despite its tongue-in-cheek acronym, Great Autos of Yesteryear is not exclusively gay, nor does it require that members own a vintage car. “Our club welcomes all cars,” says G.A.Y. President Brian Keligian, who says that members have cars ranging from 1900 to new models, both domestic and foreign. ...

What about cars hasn’t changed since their inception? Four wheels, some sort of motor and at least one seat. What has changed? Everything else, most of it driven by technology. Here are some of the most interesting automotive technologies to arrive in recent years to make modern cars—well, modern.
Capacitive Touch Controls
As seen on: Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac ATS, various Ford/Lincoln models
Buttons may soon be a thing of the past, at least on the dashboard. Manufacturers such as Ford and GM are well on their way to banishing “buttons” as we know them, in hopes of reducing cost and complexity while adding a bit of Buck Rogers futurism to their interiors. In their place are slick new capacitive touch controls that sense the heat in your fingers rather than their pressure, and allow designers and engineers to arrange controls on sleek panels rather than in banks ...

When you need to get away but just don’t have the time or money to take a real vacation, there’s always a good ol’ fashioned road trip—below are the best weekend road trips for Southern Californians.

A Little Bit of Romance: Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara may be only a little over an hour outside Los Angeles, but it’s a world apart from trash-tastic, fast-paced Hollywood, and that makes it the ultimate quick weekend getaway for lovers or lovers-to-be. For a change of pace, a visit to the romantic, perfectly manicured beachside city that has earned the nickname “the American Riviera” may be all you need to turn your bad romance into a good one. Not only has the sleepy seaside town provided the bucolic backdrop for HBO’s critically-acclaimed film Cinema Verité as well as sentimental box office blockbusters like Sideways and It’s Complicated, it is also home ...

Buying a new car is a big deal. For most of us, it will involve making a commitment to pay hundreds of dollars per month for five or more years. But much of the time, we treat buying a new car with the same level of thoughtfulness that goes into picking up a one-night stand. These tips are meant to give you the best chance for an LTR with the car of your dreams.
1. You can’t hurry love
Don’t fall in love with the first car you see. Much like navigating the world of dating, you may as well sample a variety of cars before making a selection. The annual automotive issue of Consumer Reports magazine, consumerreports.org, has reliability records for every car on the market and can help you narrow down your choices.
2. Start early
Start shopping early in the morning. If you have ...
