Fashion Icon 2012, Frontiers_Publishing-NAMon, 19 Mar 2012 20:51:46 GMThttp://emmisinteractive.comNeil McCormick
In 2004, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt brought to brilliant, heartbreaking life unrepentant teenage gay hustler Neil McCormick in the Gregg Araki-directed Mysterious Skin. Now granted, perhaps not the most obvious choice as a Fashion Icon, but I ask you honestly: Is there anything sexier than an angel with a dirty mind?

Of course life on the mean streets isn’t all Fruit Loops and riding in cars with Michelle Trachtenberg—it can be a tricky fashion row to hoe: You’ve got to stay warm and look cool at the same time (see #3), you’ve got to always be ready (see #7), you’ve got to have faith (see #2) and you need to walk away from any situation smelling like a rose—or even better, white pepper, ginger and vetiver (see #11).

While I thankfully never played little league with an overly friendly coach, I did survive that childhood hell known as Boy Scouts. So with that in mind, I offer you one last piece of advice from the bottomless black hole where my heart should be: Always be prepared (see #9).

The Seen:
1. It’s that magical time of year when a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of—well, around here I guess other young men, but for the sake of this column, let’s say shorts. Yes, you can now officially run amuck on the city streets in less clothes than usual without the ‘Flip flops in December? He must be off his meds!’ comments from the casual passerby.

Of course, pulling off an early spring shorts look does come with challenges. So instead of rushing over to Macy’s Men’s and shopping willy-nilly, put down the Amex, pour yourself a scotch on the rocks and take some lessons from a master of daring looks, Gossip Girl’s notorious ne’er-do-well, Chuck Bass (actor Ed Westwick). Preppy, playful and perfectly bad—you know you love him. XOXO.

The Seen:

1. The streets are jam-packed with bustling urbanites and the ratio of homeless to hipster is 1:75. Granted, no one will be enforcing a dress code, but I think we can agree it’s always a good idea to dress for an occasion.

Now, I’m not suggesting you don a silk-screened skeleton-print onesie from the Halloween Superstore (though that could totally work), but I do believe we can borrow a few clues from Jake Gyllenhaal in the title role of 2001’s Donnie Darko to assemble the perfect look for a night of broody, artistic downtowning.

The Seen:

1.
