Mexican Soccer Coach Defends Fans' Use of Homophobic Slur

Mexico, along with Brazil, are already under fire from FIFA after their fans chanted ‘puto’, a term for a male prostitute and a homophobic slur, during World Cup matches. In response to the criticism, the Mexican team’s coach has defended their fans.

Mexican coach Miguel Herrera spoke to the Associated Press about the controversy, and described the chanting as “not that bad.” He explained further that, “We’re with our fans. It’s something they do to pressure the opposing goalkeeper.”

FIFA have singled out Mexico and Brazil for the chant, and have suggested that points penalties could be in line if the chanting continues, which could affect the teams’ chances of proceeding into the knockout stages of the tournament.

The Christian Science Monitor have also investigated fans’ views on the issue, and found that the majority see the chant as harmless. Erika Carmona said that, “We Mexicans say too many naughty words – even at weddings,” adding that within a soccer match the chant was “not discriminatory.”

However, Alejandro Brito Lemus, of Mexican LGBT magazine Letra S, explained that “It’s completely homophobic.” Responding to claims that the word is only being used to call the other team cowards, Brito added, “The connotation is cowardice, more than thinking of a homosexual. But, the [gay person] is the one that is acting cowardly, doesn’t have courage.”

FIFA have not yet announced the results of their investigation, or whether any punishment will be given to the Mexican team for their fans’ behavior.

The word "Puto" is not homophobic at all. It is a deragotory term for male prostitute, but only that. I'm Mexican, and trust me, I know it mean's slut or whore. This word is mostly used in the female version, or "puta". But keep in mind that this word has no homophoic tendency whatsoever. Dominic, get your facts straight about the word before you make the LGBT community nervous over a silly story. This is what we do as soccer fans during the World Cup. Plus, the Brazilian team are a bunch of "putos". They cheat mercilessly. This is the reason they lost to Mexico during the 2012 Summer Olympics.

@KrAfTwErK What the hell are you talking about? Puto means gay, and not in a nice way. It is a derogatory, homophobic term akin to "fag" in English.
